Résumé

Un documentaire cinématographique sur la montée du militarisme japonais, malgré les outrances inhérentes à tout film de propagande et à la xénophobie ambiante liée à la guerre.

Compilation film from the famous propaganda series Why We Fight (directed by Frank Capra) to show the home front and the American soldiers what kind of people their enemies were. Ivens composed a four hour rough cut from Japanese films and news footage, which was rejected by the American Army staff on political grounds. When finally a completely re-edited version was released with the same title and the contents turned out to be racist and aimed against the Japanese people instead of against the Japanese emperor's politics and the generals, Ivens completely dissociated himself from the film.
