A Once and Future Peace

A hybrid animated / live-action documentary exploring the past, present and future of Peacemaking Circles, and how this ancient restorative justice practice has been reimagined to keep youth out of prison. The film tracks the parallel stories of a troubled teen facing serious jail time, and the former Cambodian gang leader serving as his mentor.

"There are better alternatives and stronger working models to a punitive justice system for youth. This important film asks you to consider a healthier way to treat youthful offenders, one rooted in love. Returning to Inland T'lingit Nation,into a moment in history when Harold Gatensby (Dahka T'lingit) and Judge Barry Stuart subvert the colonial structure of juvenile court by re-implementing the longstanding T'lingit tradition of peace circles, which are practiced by many Indigenous nations as a restorative measure. Also inspired by the movement is Saroeum Phoung, who, after escaping the brutal Pol Pot regime, found himself in East Boston's gangs until he had the opportunity to transition his own life and now works with youth in peacemaking circles. Told with live action and animated sequences, this gift of a film explores the possibility a better future. "
