Luc Bondy? Frank Castorf? Pina Bausch? Not at all. The film Effi-Hasi spent one year following the fate of a small theatre company far away from any metropolitan hotspot. Nevertheless this film tells a lot about the daily sacrifice and heavy workload of people devoting their life to theatre.
"Das Theater an der Effingerstrasse" ist situated on a busy street in Bern/Switzerland, sandwiched between a pizzeria and a hairdresser. It's the kind of theatre you won't find easily today: commited to old fashioned emotional story telling and mainly reliant on their actual revenues. Public founding was withdrawn a long time ago.
Effi-Hasi follows three productions in the course of their making: Gilles Tschudi fights the publishers ban of his play and for the inspiration of his main actor. Uwe Schönbeck, a former tenor at the opera, is struggeling with his health and learning the contrabass. And theatre principal Markus Keller finds tragedy not only in Romeo and Juliet, but also within the budget planning for the upcoming season...
