Résumé

Renée Falconetti a marqué l'histoire du cinéma par son interprétation de Jeanne d'Arc dans le film de Carl Th. Dreyer La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc en 1928. Pour beaucoup, sa vie, son existence, sa carrière artistique se limitent à cette interprétation bouleversante. Mais derrière l'icône du cinéma mondial, derrière ce visage tour à tour ému, exalté, endolori, combatif, ou résigné, il y a l'histoire d'une femme, actrice de théâtre admirée dans les années 20, personnage riche, parfois fantasque, à l'histoire tourmentée, et au destin tragique. Le film tente de raconter cette histoire, de dresser le portrait sensible de cette comédienne. De retrouver la femme derrière ce visage devenu image sacrée. Ce visage dont Dreyer disait qu'il y avait vu les traces de souffrances anciennes, et de pulsions autodestructrices.

Renée Falconetti marked the history of cinema with her interpretation of Joan of Arc in Carl Dreyer’s film The Passion of Joan of Arc in 1928. For many, her life, her existence, her artistic career are limited to this upsetting interpretation. But behind the icon of world cinema, behind this face alternately moved, exalted, sore, combative, or resigned, there is the story of a woman, star of the 1920s, rich character, sometimes fantastical, her tormented story, and her tragic destiny. The film tries to tell this story, to draw the sensitive portrait of this actress. To find the woman behind that face that became a sacred image. That face Dreyer said he saw in it traces of ancient suffering, and autodestructive impulses.
