Like the Glitch of a Ghost

Researching at the Eye Filmmuseum archive, Paula Albuquerque found a piece of religious/medical propaganda from the 1950s. Shot in Suriname, the original footage was meant to show the supporting role that the Dutch settlers created for themselves, establishing a regime of indebtedness and justifying territorial dispossession and biopolitical power dynamics in former colonies. Like the Glitch of a Ghost is a fake double, which introduces a glitch that actualizes the archive through a problem and affirms the vital sovereignty of those who were depicted as subaltern.

Rodado no Suriname, o material original pretendia mostrar o papel assistencialista que os colonos neerlandeses criaram para si mesmos, estabelecendo um regime de endividamento e justificando a expropriação territorial e uma dinâmica de poder biopolítica em antigas colónias. Like the Glitch of a Ghost é um falso duplo, que introduz uma falha que actualiza o arquivo por meio de um problema e afirma a soberania vital dos que foram retratados como subalternos.
