Puglia, Southern Italy. A rich and fertile land where agriculture remains the primary source of subsistence for many. Despite being in the third millennium, women's work opportunities are few and far between. Most women work as farm labourers, just as their mothers and grandmothers had done before them, often having to provide for a whole family with their sole income. A woman like Vita, Teresa and Daniela work up to 10 hours a day in adverse conditions, in fields more than 100 kilometres from home. They are subject to long hours, fatigue and hardships as well as the whim of the "caporale" : the illegal intermediary ruling over the labourers on behalf of the landowners. He hires the women, negotiates their pay and supplies their transport, often abusing his position of power. A quasi Third World situation, in the fourth most economically powerful country in Europe. But Vita, Teresa and Daniela have decided to face the blatant indifference of their peers and find the courage to fight back. Their battle against injustice is not easily won, but they refuse to give up. With a cinema vérité style and few interviews this film draws us into the daily life of Vita, Teresa and Daniela and their determination in taking their lives into their own hands
